The Mind Behind

The idea for Kidspickflicks.com was conceived in the car ride home after seeing Van Helsing.  Nine-year-old Cole McNamara could not believe that the special-effects film about slaying legendary monsters was panned by the critics – he and all his tween-age friends thought Van Helsing was thrilling. In fact, Cole noted, Van Helsing action figures were in the stores and the film had a merchandising deal with Burger King Kids Meals. Van Helsing was clearly a kids’ movie being evaluated on adult terms. And that’s unfair. And if there’s one thing kids object to    . . . it’s “not fair.”

So, the 4th grader envisioned a place where kids could put their own two cents in and decide for themselves which movies are good and which ones aren’t worth wasting their movie nights on.

Cole’s mother helped him get the site up, makes sure he sees all the movies on or before opening day, and runs the operation. Tara McNamara is a TV and radio news personality and believes strongly that kids need to experience journalism firsthand to learn that just because someone says something (“An excellent movie!” – Susie Sycophant, Daily News) doesn’t mean it’s true.

Cole has now passed the torch. 12-year-old Los Angeles resident Miranda R. is KPF's Chief Film Critic, Cole’s 9-year-old sister Riley is President of KidsPickFlicks.com, and Cole continues as the Lead Teen Critic as well as KPF's box office reporter.

Tara, Cole and Riley live in Santa Clarita, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. Cole is now 15.

Miranda R. is also a reporter for Scholastic Kids. Read more about her here: http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/contributor.jsp?id=3747822
