The movie Battle for Terra is an action-packed , fast paced, sci-fi film, which I thought was awesome. It wasn’t as good as I hoped, but it was really enjoyable and I would recommend it. Any sci-fi loving boy or girl would love to watch this film.

It’s set in the distant future, as human kind struggles to find a planet that they can live on. Their only hope is a planet they named Terra. But the people living their already can’t survive in the world humans want to make it, which leads to battle. Mala, a teenage girl of the Terrain species gets involved when she meets a human, and she leads a fight for her planet that was once peaceful. The story to me was very interesting, since the humans are the invaders, like one of the two films that have that theme this year.

This film isn’t funny, really, so if that all that you care about in movies, this film isn’t for you. It has more of a serious edge, although the beginning sort of has a fun vibe. As I said before, it’s full of action, which I like a lot, and I’m sure any boy from 7 and up would enjoy, even younger. Action looks really cool, and for some reason, it just triggers a nerve I guess that just makes you like it.

The dialogue is so-so, and what’s supposed to be the comic relief (a robot invented by humans) is bland. It’s voiced well, but it overall could be better. Some stuff is just a little weird, like the silent animated “noooooooo” scene which offered more comedy to me than the robot did, and can get cheesey with lines like “It has begun,” but it doesn’t really play too much of a part in the film.

The animation was really good. I liked the character design and the settings were amazing. It was detailed and the colors fit. The 3-D didn’t really do much, so I leave up to you to decide if you want to see it that way.

So, overall, this is a film you’d probably really enjoy. It depends on what you like, and even so, it probably won’t bore you.

I think it could have been a little bit longer. Besides that, it was an excellent explosive movie. First I was bored, then I got happy and not bored. I liked the battle part and the whale birds.

Good Not Great

It was good, but not great. The story was about a young alien who found an injured person and made a little home for him. His people destroyed planet Earth in a war and now they’re trying to destroy the alien’s planet to make it a home for humans. I didn’t like the 3D because the 3D glasses hurt me. I think it’s for 5 and up.

Not Interesting Enough to Explore

BATTLE FOR TERRA is about the remainder of humanity attacking a peaceful alien species for their planet. Battle for Terra relays only a "make love not war" message rather than showing much action. There's not much making Battle for Terra good or bad. Also, it's pretty short making the experience go quickly... however, that may be a blessing. Ages 7+.

PARENT REVIEW:

BATTLE FOR TERRA could better be described as the high stakes Moral Dilemma of Lt. Jim Slater. While the story follows inventive teenager Mala (Evan Rachel Wood), it’s more about the pilot of an attacking spaceship she rescues (Luke Wilson). After Slater learns how peaceful planet Terra is, he finds himself in the moral quandary of following orders and killing off all the native life so humanity can survive or refusing and thus killing himself, his family and his people. Tough choice but certainly worth discussing after the film.

Another element to the storyline comments may feel a little familiar: Mala is forbidden from inventing and exploring science because it is against the wishes of the government and the religious leaders, which are intertwined. Additionally, the consequence for Mala's disobedience is as harsh as harsh comes.

The 3D is a nice and genuine but not necessary enhancement to the Sci Fi story. A real plus for parents: the film is pretty short. For kids 6 and up.
