Quantum means a sliver or something -- and that's how much actual Bond you get in Quantum of Solace. In the follow up to Casino Royale, James Bond is seeking revenge for the death of his girlfriend. This time around, the story is pretty good and has Americans as the big evil villians. Now the bad stuff. One thing I excused in Royale, but won't here, is that there aren't any of Bond's signature cars or cool fictional gadgets. Another problem is that action is hectic and confusing. On a scale of 1 to 10, Quantum of Solace doesn't even score a 007.

PARENT REVIEW: Typical Bond

James Bond traditionally means booze, casual sex, action, guns and dead bodies. In that regard, Quantum of Solace doesn't disappoint.
While bringing the James Bond franchise into the millenium, the filmmakers dispensed with the amazing tech gadgets that have inspired some kids to grow up and make those imaginary inventions real. They didn't dispense with the emotionless killing, which feels odd in the current era of more responsible moviemaking compared to 40 years ago.

Bond kills people he shouldn't. His boss, M, is irritated only because MI-6 needs to get information and you can't interrogate someone if they're dead. In some cases, the people Bond thoughtlessly kills turn out to be good guys, darn it all.

We're supposed to remember that is just the second episode in explaining how James Bond became a super-suave superspy. Apparently, he wasn't always as slick.

We learn things in Quantum: Bond helps a woman get revenge on a villain by explaining how the adrenaline rush is different when one kills for personal reasons rather than duty. We also learn that even when a girl has a job to do, she'll still hook up with her adversary, although she'll just be "mad" at herself for it.

It's Bond per usual, I suppose, but the MPAA rating still feels a little generous. Of course, the larger point is that in no way was James Bond ever meant to be a family film. Ages 14 and up.
