The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader is Lucy and Edmund's story and is better that way. Peter and Susan are now living in America, not England, and Lucy and Edmund live with their cousin, Eustace, who doesn't believe their stories of Narnia. That is, until a painting comes to life and brings all three of them (Lucy, Edmund and Eustace) to Narnia. Their mission is to find the seven swords  that Prince Caspian's father gave to seven lords he had known.

Returning in Chronicles 3 is Reepicheep, the sword-fighting mouse who is strongly wise and becomes, I guess, friends with Eustace. Reepicheep is a little funny but that's pretty much the only thing that's actually funny. There is a scary part, an evil mist, so just 7 and up should see this movie. I liked the adventures they have and how they get to Narnia.  The 3D was really pretty good because you could actually see the 3D.

Narnia

Do you like imagination and action? Well, Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the movie to see. There certainly is a ton of mystical and evil magic happening. My opinion about this movie is it is like a kid's biggest dream to be able to be part of this action-packed, magical and exciting adventure. I thought is was excellent because the director made Eustace almost like the author, telling his thoughts and experience of being on a magical boat. The images of the life-like creatures almost made me feel like I was part of the journey. Lucy and Edmund grow up so fast in learning to trust themselves and to be brave, and the movie encouraged my imagination to believe. The way it ties in the unpredictable and the magical part really made you think and try to predict or solve what was going to happen. All in all the movie really got my attention and to believe I was there. This is an excellent movie for families and teens who like straight up imagination and adventure.

Narnia

In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader the plot was full of action but confusing. The confusing part was that I didn’t understand the White Witch part. What was her role in the movie, as I don’t believe she had a connection with anyone. I thought the drama was short and weak. It was not scary at all. I thought that the finding of the seven lords would be more difficult. The drama was short and weak because I thought the dramatic scenes were not drawn out. If you’re looking for a scary movie and adventure this movie may lack substance, as the scenes are quick and not pieced together in unity

PARENT: Super Jesus-y, Less Scary

THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER seals up THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA threequel like the holy trinity of family filmmaking. THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE gave us the "Father" in purehearted Aslan the Lion who, like Jesus, is resurrected. PRINCE CASPIAN is the "son," literally, he's the son of a murdered king; while there's a Judas-like moment of betrayal, it feels the least Biblical of the three films. And the third film, VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER, is like the Holy Ghost in that Aslan is now an omnipresent spirit who reappears when needed and called upon for help. So, if you're a Christian looking for faith-based film, you hit the jackpot: THE DAWN TREADER is Super Jesus-y. If you're religious but not Christian, CHRONICLES 3 can serve you as well because Aslan's existence can be explained as God -- he doesn't have to represent Jesus per se. But he will need to be explained. In his parting words (SPOILER ALERT), he tells Lucy and Edmund he is called Aslan in Narnia but "goes by another name" in their world.

VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER also works for audiences of different faiths because those who are not looking for religious symbolism and subtext won't find it. This story deals with overcoming temptation: an evil mist messes with the minds of the lead characters, promising what they most desire.

The evil mist (which also swallows people up) can be a little scary but it's the sea serpent that is the most frightening -- think of the Kraken in CLASH OF THE TITANS. Not seeing the film in 3D should help keep the nightmares at bay but for more sensitive and younger kids, hold off on seeing the film until DVD (the scary moments should play mildly on even a 52" screen). The good news is that the battle scenes in VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER are the mildest of the three pics-- much, much less violent than the previous CHONICLES OF NARNIA films. For kids 7 and up.

Ty-Simpkins: Meet IRON MAN 3's 11-year Old Star

altby Miranda R., Age 15

At 11 years old, Ty Simpkins already has quite a few credits on his resume. Simpkins has been in movies since he was barely 3 months old, and has roles in flicks such as Insidious, The Next Three Days, and Little Children. Maybe even more interesting is how many times he's been cast in films with his real life sister Ryan Simpkins - they play siblings in Revolutionary Road, Pride and Glory and Arcadia, among others.

altBut for Iron Man 3, Ty's first action movie, he goes it alone. Ty plays Harley Keener, an intelligent kid who has a run-in with Iron Man and actually helps him save the day.

Ty's favorite part of working on Iron Man 3 was being able to spend time with its star Robert Downey Jr. "Robert's really fun to work with. He's a really nice guy."

Like many kids his age, Ty is a huge Iron Man fan. "My favorite superhero is Iron Man and I'm not just saying that because I worked on the Iron Man movie. It actually is Iron Man," he says very emphatically....
