The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

The Chronicles of a great movie. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is about four siblings living during World War II who find a passage to a magic world that has a war of it’s own. The action in The Chronicles is bladder-holding (that’s what I did). Some things are not predictable including the opening scene of a Nazi attack on Great Britain from a kids point of view. I wasn’t scared but it would be scary for a little kid. Overall, it is very worthwhile and makes you want to read the book series.

Exciting But A Little Bit Scary

"The Chronicles of Narnia" is exciting from the moment that Lucy finds her way into the forest. It is a little bit scary because of the battle scenes, there is a lot of killing, and a lot of fighting. I do think kids should see it because it is adventurous and exciting. Actually, I wouldn’t take kids who are 3 or 4 because they might get scared.

Kids and Adults Will be Awed

Kids and adults will be awed as they watch Lucy and her siblings discover an enchanting land in a wardrobe. Edmund, Peter, Susan, and Lucy are sent away from home to live with their relatives because of the war. While playing hide and seek, Lucy hides in a wardrobe and finds a magical land where it's been winter for 100 years because it has been ruled by evil. Will Peter, Susan, Lucy, and Edmund be able to help those in Narnia conquer evil and bring back spring again? What I liked about the movie was how much detail they put into the creatures that lived in Narnia. I think others should see the movie because it shows how you can do amazing things with Jesus's help. In addition, kids and adults will be amazed by this movie and I think it will encourage them to do great things and discover new things just as Lucy, Peter, Susan, and Edmund had.

PARENT REVIEW: Violent. Really Violent.

It’s World War II and Great Britain is under attack: a mother sends her kids to the countryside to keep them safe – unknowing that once there, the kids would become immersed in a war where they are the key figures. That’s the premise of "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" and the film does an excellent job of making the viewer KNOW and FEEL what it would be like to be in these kids' shoes.

The siblings stumble upon a portal that takes them to the mystical land of Narnia only to learn it is prophesied long ago that it is up to them to save an entire country from the rule of an evil queen. The kids find themselves in the moral dilemma: should they put themselves out and into danger to save an entire civilization or just go home where they will be safe. One of the children unknowingly meets a kind stranger who says she’s the queen, gives him candy, and makes enticing promises – he trusts her and comes to her palace as requested, only to find that his selfishness and blind trust leads to the murders of innocent citizens. The children have to choose whether to kill and later the boys find themselves leading a war.

Besides making moral decisions, teaching tools in the movie including seeing the effect of war on families, the real historical situation of nearly 1 million children being sent to the countryside for safety when Hitler began the Blitzkrieg on London, and discussing the mythological creatures in the film including minotaurs, centaurs, cyclops, fauns, and satyrs.

That said, there is much in Chronicles that creates a reason to pause before allowing your kids to see this thought-provoking film. Some of the mythological creatures are frightening to look at, a key character is slaughtered, and the battle scenes with lead characters Peter and Edmund at the helm wearing chain mail armor is very scary – to see a 15 year old stabbing creatures with a sword is hard to watch. Battle isn’t glamorous and the viewer sees the anguish of war; however, in the fantasy land of Narnia, the mortal consequences of battle are temporary. Putting an airbrush on war is a true disservice.

You really need to know your child before buying or renting Narnia, but the best part of Chronicles is that it will inspire children to read the entire series.
