Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America the best of most recent superhero movies. It’s an exciting movie that appeals to fans of 1940’s style.

The actors portray their characters well. Chris Evans is fantastic: his portrayal of the origin of Captain America as a little guy is perfect, and he transitions to superhero with ease and makes the character more believable. And I have to admit, Hayley Atwell is surprisingly awesome. Miss Carter is definitely the type of female character that I love; she’s hard-core, speaks her mind, and manages to look glamorous while always carrying a gun. The rest of the cast does a fantastic job in making this movie feel real. You either love or love-to-hate a character.

I thought that the plot of the movie was fun, and combined World War II movie well with superhero movie. Some of the plot points in the late first half make less sense to younger audiences aren’t as familiar with 1940’s history. Even with that understanding, the movie tends to drag a little in that area with a lack of action. Captain America still doesn’t come close to being a boring movie, however, because the very early part of the movie and the latter half make up for it.

Overall, Captain America is definitely a pick-it. It stands alone well, but it also makes me excited for The Avengers movie coming soon.

not true marvel

Captain America takes place in the time of World War 2. Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans) is an asthmatic 90 l.b. weakling, trying to become a veteran. Scientists make him a much taller and muscular "super soldier" and tries to defeat the hydra guys and the villanous red skull. Captain America's action sequences made me laugh because they weren't really realistic. Don't reccomend it even for Captain America comic fans.

Marvel's Best But Story Issues

Salute the Captain! CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER is about a modified WW2 super soldier fighting HYDRA, a rogue branch of the Nazi government. What CAPTAIN AMERICA does best is supply the action, unlike IRON MAN(heh). The style of action, cinematography, high quality of acting and the tone are all consistent with the Marvel style we've seen in the last few years. The one disappointing difference is the script. The film starts off too slow and Captain America doesn't face off against the main villains until the second half. By the time we get to the HYDRA meat of the story, the U.S. Army cuts through HYDRA all too easily. The audience is left feeling that the HYDRA soldiers are more bubbling stormtroopers than an actual threatening superpower. Side note: the 3D makes everything look dark, taking the glasses off reveals better lighting.

Best Superhero Film for Kids in the Last Decade

Back in the day, superhero movies were for kids. Then came Christopher Nolan. Nolan introduced audiences to a more realistic, grittier and authentic Batman and audiences loved it. One problem: the movies were no longer for kids. Several thousand children witnessed a truly frightening monster in Heath Ledger’s psychotic Joker in The Dark Knight and watched torture Middle Eastern-style in Iron Man before parents realized superheroes were no longer kids stuff.

I’m as big a fan of Christopher Nolan, love his take on Batman and can’t wait to see how Superman evolves. However, a superhero movie without kids is like watching a movie without popcorn. Viscerally, it just feels like part of the experience. Green Lantern then tried to make a family friendly-movie but only succeeded in making a movie that adults THOUGHT kids would like. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, however, manages to blend the realism of superhero movies with a film that most of the kids can enjoy with mom and dad.

In making a movie set in 1942 where the enemy is Hitler’s fictional right hand man, kids can experience American patriotism that hasn’t been seen in generations. The film also steers clear of foul language. The “monster” in this film, Red Skull, is bizarre-looking enough to not be truly scary but realistic enough to keep audiences engaged in the film. CAPTAIN AMERICA is a war movie and violent moments exist but most of the deaths are “clean” and faceless. The worst scene just shows a death as a red mist of blood.

While CAPTAIN AMERICA is a fictionalized version of America’s fight against Hitler, CAPTAIN AMERICA does have an actual place in history. The cover of the first CAPTAIN AMERICA comic book served as a type of World War II-propaganda and that true story is built into the film. That’s a great place to start as a leaping off point to discuss what really DID and DIDN’T happen during World War II. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER is the best superhero movie for kids in the last decade. Ages 8 and up.
