The Smurfs

The Smurfs is the smurfiest smurftastic film! I was very familiar with the Smurfs before the movie, I knew about the old TV show, but you don't have to already know - the movie explains who they are. The Smurfs is about these little blue people who are being chased by this wizard Gargamel and they get sucked up through a portal to New York City. With the help of a couple of humans (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays), the Smurfs work to escape Gargamel and return home. I enjoyed the movie because first, they brought it alive; second, it was very funny; and third, now kids maybe will like it too and maybe the show will come back on. I didn't think it was the best of 3D but there are some great moments where things come at you. Ages 5 and up.

Silly Smurfs

The Smurfs is about these blue people that sing and live in mushrooms. Some of the smurfs try to save Clumsy the smurf, but they got sucked up by a blue moon. Then they end up in New York. Papa Smurf and other smurfs try to find a star gazer to look at the moon and see if it is a blue moon to get home. Then the wizard catches Papa Smurf. All the smurfs trick the wizard to come out into an army of smurfs. It is funny. I'll give this 5 stars for all ages. There is a lot of silly humor. I like Grouchy Smurf and Smurfet the best. She is beautiful.

Seriousness and Humor

The Smurfs is this really funny movie about blue people from a magical world. After they fall through a portal they have to get a taste of what it's like to live in NYC. Luckily this nice lady and nice man take them in. All the smurfs are trying to find this thing called a stargazer because they think it is going to get them home. In the meantime there is this evil wizard roaming the city called Gargamel and he wants to capture the smurfs. I loved this movie. I would give it five stars. I loved the fact that it had humor and it was also serious because the smurfs are taking a risk going through NYC and have to get back before the moon rises.

Not for younger kids

This movie seems for younger kids. It's rated G and all that, but I saw kids in theater who just sat there while everybody else laughed hysericaly. I wouldn't recomend for under 6. Kids that are that little just wouldn't get it.

No "Blue" Humor

First, it must be said that Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays make the world's most adorable couple. While fate has it they'll never couple up in real life, they could easily be the next Hanks-Ryan. In THE SMURFS, Harris and Mays play a married couple expecting their first child. When Clumsy Smurf falls into "Patrick's" box at a work event, the Smurfs come into the couple's life. The Smurfs become a metaphor for how Patrick is not prepared to add a baby into the mix of his stressful work life. The message of the story -- to appreciate fleeting special moments -- is really directed toward the parents, a growing trend in children's films.

The storyline for kids is about the Smurfs trying to escape Gargamel, this time in New York City. With the Smurfs all named after their primary characteristic (Brainy, Clumsy, Grumpy, etc.), kids learn they can always choose who they are beyond how others label them. The messaging for kids isn't too strong, though, it's mainly just silly fun.

The big question for parents may be: can I stomach seeing this film? I found the Smurfs annoying when I was a kid, but the film is more palatable than the TV show (thank you live-action storyline!). Plus, Hank Azaria is hilarious as Gargamel. The use of the word "smurf" as an adjective and verb is frequent and is sometimes used to replace a curse word ("son of a smurf!"). One unsettling thing that may make some kids uncomfortable is that the cat is continually physically mistreated for comic purposes. Azrael is a CGI cat but it still may bother some children to see an animal depicted that way, even if he's a villain.

Judging from my screening, the story wasn't interesting to the preK crowd, a 4-year old near me asked his mother if he could go home about 2/3 into the film. While THE SMURFS seems like it's a movie for very young children, I don't recommend for kids under 5.
