A Thousand Words

This film would've been better if it shortened to A Thousand Words, then it might not have wasted so much of my time. A Thousand Words is about a fast-talking agent (Eddie Murphy) being cursed by having his life tied to a tree that loses a leaf for every word he speaks, meaning when the tree is out of leaves, the agent dies. Here's a fun game you can play: look for outdated pop culture references that would've been funny and relevant, the year this movie was actually shot (this is more fun than the movie itself). The main problem of the film is that its simply not funny, just how unfunny? I didn't laugh at any one point during this film. Beyond this the characters are all fairly unlikeable, the story's predictable, and maybe worst of all is the that it doesn't feel like the agent's "punishment" fits his "crime" -- which is being self-absorbed and insincere, which aren't great qualities, but not worth a death sentence. Maybe something more along the line of a 24 hour curse al la Liar Liar would have felt more appropriate.

Not for Kid of Any Age

A Brian Robbins film starring Eddie Murphy? Sounds like a film for kids, right? Oh no. A THOUSAND WORDS is for adults only. In fact, I asked my 17-year old if he could leave the theater during one particularly inappropriate moment.

It's always hard to guess which Eddie Murphy you're going to get -- foul-mouthed Eddie Murphy or kids-movie Eddie Murphy. A THOUSAND WORDS has foul language, Eddie's character getting high, getting drunk and suicidal, lots of talk about marital relations including one extremely extremely inappropriate scene involving pleather and a dog collar. Please, don't bring anyone with you to the theater that would ever be defined as a "kid!"

The ending of the film is actually quite moving, but it's a redemption story that kids -- who hopefully haven't messed up their lives yet -- can't relate to. For adults only.
