KPF EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Animation is considering making the Samurai Jack movie says the creator of the TV series, Genndy Tartakovsky. Tartakovsky is making his feature directing debut with SPA's Hotel Transylvania, opening Sept. 28, and will be directing Popeyefor SPA as well.
During my recent interview with Tartakovsky, I asked about the fate of the Samurai Jack movie which has been in development with different studios and producers over the last decade. "It keeps going back and forth. Different people come by and pick it up and try to make it and it never gets to that level yet," Tartokovsky says. "My boss here just started talking about it, 'Why don't we bring Jack over here?" And I go, 'Why not, you want it? I'll do it!'"
The most recent action on the film was in 2009 when J.J. Abrams announced plans to make the film through his Bad Robot production company. Whether or not Abrams would come along with the studio change has yet to be decided, but Tartakovsky indicates the development time with the Star Trek producer-director could move the project along quicker. "We have an outline for a movie we had with J.J. Abrams, so we do have some stuff. I think it will happen."
