Naomi Watts (King Kong) stars as English writer Gertrude Bell, the first woman to graduate from Oxford University at the turn of the 20th century. Bell was also a cartographer and explorer who determined the boundaries for several countries in the Middle East: Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Bell and Lawrence became good friends early on, bonding over their passion for archaeology. Their two helped establish the Hashemite dynasties in in Jordan and Iraq. Incidentally, Lawrence's death from a head injury in a motorcycle accident is what led to the use of helmets. Werner Herzog generally makes art house movies, but the one you probably heard of is the Nicolas Cage-Eva Mendes remake The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans. |
Twilight superstar Robert Pattinson will play T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, in Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert. Lawrence was an office in the British Army who served as a liaison during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire.
