17 Again

Zac Efron playing basketball, again. 17 Again is about a once great high school basketball star wishing he could live it all again and getting his wish granted. 17 Again has some decent writing, good characters, and is funny. The flipside is you feel sometimes embarrassed to be in the theater and the story feels too predictable. All of that doesn't matter if you're a girl, because there's about 5 minutes with Zac Efron shirtless. Ages 13+.

17 Again

I thought the movie was great because a man wished he was 17 again and POOF! He got his wish! It has some parts in the movie where it has some violence and curses. Though it still was a FANTASTIC movie!

Is it me or is Zac Efron not getting any older? He seems to always be the jock who is in high school. Well, let’s get on to the review, eh?

The movie starts back when he was in high school, they were playing basketball (of course, as if all of the movies involve basketball with Zac Efron - the star), he is about to make the winning shot but his girlfriend seems upset, he gets ready to shoot but runs to find her. Then they show them married with their two kids. Things don’t go so well together, they file for a divorce and “Mark” previously Mike O’Donnell to hide in disguise, becomes friends with one of his children but of course acts like a teenager. He lives his life better but does it right as the 17 year old says. Ned, his friend who was the scorekeeper of the basketball team is rich and together they go out shopping... In style and buy new outfits and clothes, sunglasses even a hot new car. That’s about how far I’ll go, I guess you’ll just have to see the movie.

It wasn’t too funny or humorous, maybe a little dry.

PARENT REVIEW: Smart & Funny, but not for HSM Set

17 AGAIN is fantastic! It's the best movie to see with your teen this year -- you'll both laugh til soda comes out your nose!

The premise of a 38-year old failure (Matthew Perry) who gets his wish to return to his teenage self (Zac Efron) to get another shot at his glory days seems like it's just another FREAKY FRIDAY knockoff. As far as the storyline goes, that may be, but the execution is brilliant and hilarious.

First, the concept (BIG in reverse) is GENIUS on many levels. First, making a film that is funny, engaging and looks to be about teens while, really, is a story about a grownup who is learning to appreciate the life he's led and realizing what teens struggle with today make a film that both parents and kids will enjoy. Second, having a character who (originally) graduated in 1989 -- the same age of parents of most teens -- and then contrasts life in high school then and now, makes the film super enjoyable to both and gives plenty to talk about after the film. Third, talented comedic talent like Thomas Lennon ("Reno 911") and Leslie Mann (KNOCKED UP) blow Jason Filardi's script up and off the page. Fourth, casting teen heartthrob/cool kid Efron with beloved Friends-alum Perry again provides both something for teens and parents. BRILLIANT!

Here's the bad news: Efron's HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL grammar school fanbase should probably sit this one out. The language is also more what you might hear at high school (actually, gentler) which your 7th grade or above child has likely heard but not what 3rd graders should be repeating. The film is dealing with some of the struggles of high school students (debating abstinence and bullying) and therefore will not interest younger kids as much, nor should they have to be aware of these issues yet, even if they do love Zac Efron.

On the other hand, it's the adult Efron disguised as a peer trying to understand and advise his teen children that is invaluable. As EFRON gives the advice that a parent might give about abstinence and to treat yourself and others with respect, well, that's an invaluable PSA.
At the end of the day, though, 17 Again is just fun for teens and adults. And, if your kid is too cool to see it with you, go with your friends. Just ask your kid to drop you off a few blocks away from the theater. For 7th grade and older.
