9

I love 9. It’s definitely my type of film. 9 is an action packed, well written, visually amazing, dramatic, and absolutely brilliant sci-fi film. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic environment, where machines live their lives after destroying all of humanity. No, there aren’t any human survivors; no, the human race doesn’t begin to exist again; yes, we made a big mistake and we couldn’t fix it. But, what does live on earth and stops the machines? Animated rag-dolls, each with their own personality and set of skills useful to survive. Life must go on; that doesn’t mean human life must go on.

There are two things that make 9 such a great movie. The first is that it’s unique. Yes, it takes ideas that have been used before, such as evil machines and the destruction of humanity, but 9 is it’s own thing. It has it’s own take on what would happen in it’s setting, it has it’s own story, and it’s definitely creative. That earned my respect. The second thing that makes 9 great is it’s characters. The characters are all very believable, very different, and you get to connect with them, even in such a short amount of time. The movie is an hour, but you really live through the story and get all your important details. 9 is also action packed and looks awesome, enough to please most people.

So, when it comes out on 9-9-09, go see 9. 9 is a great movie that’s good for adults and kids. Action loving boys and girls will have an amazing time. There’s also one more thing I have to say.… NO LOVE STORY! Yay! Some things just get old.

And don’t get 9 confused with “Nine” or “D-9”.

An Animated Apocolyptic Tale

A movie to inspire. "9" is about nine alive dolls that hold the spark of life trying to take down the robot brain that killed off humanity. Honestly, this is in my Top 5 Animation movies. The story is pretty good. However, it feels like it should have spanned a few movies rather than suppressing it down to one. Additionally, it's really gritty, dark, and even scary at times. If I saw this movie a bunch of times, I'm sure I'd find a Skynet reference. Ages 12+, Grade B

PARENT: Scientific, Thought-Provoking & Scary

When the name Tim Burton is associated with a project, you know what you're getting: dark. "9" follows suit.

Burton is just one of the four producers of Shane Acker's "9," which explores a post-apocolyptic world as seen by the ninth of nine robots with human characteristics. These nine robots are not the only creatures still inhabiting the world. The other robots, however, are the ones that brought the end of the world and seek to extinguish the nine emoti-bots as well.

"9" explores the troubles technology can bring if science is not conjoined with conscience. The debate over science as good or evil seems to be a strong theme these days in America and the movie is an excellent launching pad for discussion. "9" was borne, itself, as Acker's Oscar-nominated short film in 2005 -- so seeing the movie as commentary of a confusing time militarily is also of note. While not too overt and I personally didn't find it disturbing, it may also be read into the film that the scientist creator is a god of sorts.

All of that will likely go over the heads of kids who will just enjoy the film for its astonishing animation and unique storytelling. "9" is rated PG-13 for violence and scary moments and it does, indeed, have both. It's about murderous robots that turn on the humans and we're shown the war in which the world comes to an end as well as a few dead bodies, including a dead baby.

Tim Burton also seems to have a love for sewn-up dolls and for children who find dolls unsettling, a kidnapping robo-doll-worm could provide many a nightmare. The trailers for "9" give you a creepy vibe so your child may be the best judge whether the film is okay for her or not. Otherwise, I'd say Acker tells you which age the film is appropriate for: 9 and up.

Ty-Simpkins: Meet IRON MAN 3's 11-year Old Star

altby Miranda R., Age 15

At 11 years old, Ty Simpkins already has quite a few credits on his resume. Simpkins has been in movies since he was barely 3 months old, and has roles in flicks such as Insidious, The Next Three Days, and Little Children. Maybe even more interesting is how many times he's been cast in films with his real life sister Ryan Simpkins - they play siblings in Revolutionary Road, Pride and Glory and Arcadia, among others.

altBut for Iron Man 3, Ty's first action movie, he goes it alone. Ty plays Harley Keener, an intelligent kid who has a run-in with Iron Man and actually helps him save the day.

Ty's favorite part of working on Iron Man 3 was being able to spend time with its star Robert Downey Jr. "Robert's really fun to work with. He's a really nice guy."

Like many kids his age, Ty is a huge Iron Man fan. "My favorite superhero is Iron Man and I'm not just saying that because I worked on the Iron Man movie. It actually is Iron Man," he says very emphatically....
