Astro Boy

Astro Boy was very sad and very funny. From the commercials, I thought Astro Boy was about a lonely scientist who didn’t have a son and was lonely so he made a boy robot for a son. But, it’s really about how a scientist loses his boy (you have to see the movie to see what happens) and the scientist is so crazy about his son that he builds a replica. It’s so sad that it will be too much for some kids to handle. Some of the little kids might not understand what is going on. It’s funny because there are a lot of jokes in Astro Boy. Astro Boy makes me feels recharged!

Cute, but sad

My best friend and I went to see this movie together. It was SO cute, but we almost cried in some parts. It's an easy movie to follow and great for all ages. Though I have to say some parts may have to be explained to younger kids. Loved it!

Astro Boy Soars to the Big Screen

This adaptation of Japan's Mickey Mouse is truly special, spectacular, and heartwarming as David Bowers brings Astro back to captivate U.S. audiences once again. Imagi's work and creativity is nothing i've ever seen before as East Meets West through lush animation that will wow you. From the emotional start to the last breath, This adventure has everything you would want in a superhero movie for all ages. Packed with an emotional and thrilling tale, comedy, exciting action, and amazing visuals, This is the best animated movie of the year and probably the best superhero movie i've seen in a long time.

PARENT: Different but for the Whole Family

It seems there are more topics that ASTRO BOY touches than stars in the sky. The storytelling may be futuristic but all the underlying issues are universal. First, though, the viewer has to get through some heart-wrenching material.

Metro City’s top scientist Dr. Tenma (Nicolas Cage) has a quandary many parents face: he wants to spend time with his son Toby but as a single parent, also has to work. In his case, he and his team can only get their research funded if they make the president happy by creating advances in weaponry. Toby is fascinated with the project his dad is working on and defies his father’s orders to sneak into the presentation room to see it. He walks into the wrong room, though, and winds up being destroyed by the superweapon. That’s sad, but not the saddest part. Dr. Tenma can’t handle his son’s death and creates a super-robot boy with Toby’s DNA and memories, essentially creating a clone. That’s pretty sad, too, but we’re not done with the tragedy yet. Robot Toby picks up where Real Toby left off and doesn’t know he’s not the real deal. So, when Dr. Tenma decides he the Toby experiment is a bad idea, only reminding him of his loss instead of replacing his boy, a confused Robot Toby is banished, only thinking his father doesn’t love him and doesn’t want him anymore. Yep, that’s pretty darn sad. A few more punches come through the story but I’ll just tell you it does, eventually, get to a happy ending.

ASTRO BOY has plenty going for it as far as kids go: lots of “action,” the violence is all among the robots, comedy that appeals to kids but plenty of references/jokes that you’d have to be out of high school to understand.

Symbolism and messages both subtle and anvil in nature abound. You may have picked up that cloning is one issue. Politicians’ disregard of citizens over their own agenda is another. ASTRO BOY also delves into racism in a time where robots are “slaves” and are literally considered trash. The story has a Gladiator-type coliseum battle. The ending has a Narnia/Matrix ending that you could easily interpret as Christian allegory. OR, you and your child could simply watch a movie about a man who loves his son so much he brings him back to life in another form, who is misunderstood and persecuted for his superpowers, and ultimately represents good and love. Your choice.

Either way, ASTRO BOY has its scary moments, but overall, not too scary. It also has its sad moments, but the tears are far more likely to be streaming down the faces of parents than kids. ASTRO BOY is a different tale that captivates in ways both visually exciting, intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging. In other words, ASTRO BOY is a film the whole family can enjoy but everyone in the family might have a different experience. For kids 6 and up.
