The Final Season is almost a home run. It's about a high school baseball team bidding for the State Championship of Iowa after the school board makes the unpopular decision of closing the school and baseball program. As far as sports movies go, it's pretty good if you're into that kind of stuff. As a movie in general, though, it could have been a little better such as there was alot of whining. If only it had a little more swing. Ages 11+

PARENT REVIEW: Too Accurate About Smalltown Living

Not being a fan of watching sports, I was relieved when The Final Season was finally over. The story about a small town in Iowa in 1991 moved as slow as life perhaps did in 1991 small town Iowa, at least compared to a big city. While that may have been a deliberate choice by the director, kids in 2007 are used to quick shots and ADD type pacing; they may not have the patience to sit through the full two hours.

The Final Season tells the true story of the farming community of Norway, Iowa, where the high school baseball team won 19 state championships in a row at the time at the time the state decided to close the school. One of the lead characters is Mitch Acres, a troubled kid from Chicago who comes to stay with his grandparents when his dad can't handle him. Mitch smokes, drinks, joyrides, has no respect for authority, and asks another teen "where can I buy some weed?" The kids in the town make it clear that is all unacceptable -- except for buying beer, which seems to be fine. That said, we don't see any kids drinking or buying alcohol. Some cursing is also present, the "S" word is the harshest and was used when you'd likely hear it in real life. We also see some scenes of kids fighting, one in particular may be accurate but is hard to watch.

The Final Season is about kids, therefore, the message of perserverence becomes relatable to them. For kids 8 and up -- and it helps if you like to watch baseball.
