It is most definitely a girl movie, however, considering the fact that a whole 2/3 of it is about girl pining after boy, falling in love, and pining still.
But the poetry and music bring the movie alive in a whole new way. To be honest, if it weren't about Keats and didn't have anything to do with his poetry I would grade this a 1-star. But his poetry is touching and real and enrapturing.
The acting was superb. The crying scenes were far beyond any film I've ever seen. The actors were very ordinary looking, but still handsome, which was very realistic.
Above all, I applaud that it is clean. Bright Star had a clear go ahead that would have been natural for the characters to sleep together, but they restrained and that made the film and their relationship all the sweeter.
Support this film!

The problem is: not too many kids like this now.

BRIGHT STAR is about the love life and tragic end of the young, poor poet John Keats. Plenty of rhyme is shared in the dialogue which does give it some depth but doesn't really increase the understanding. The film is rated PG and other than the frequent use of "breast" (which will draw snickers from the under 18 crowd), the film has no concerns to parents but one: your kid's boredom will no doubt interfere with your own enjoyment of the film. For the extremely literate teen.
