THE NUTCRACKER 3D tells us a story about an 11-year old girl in 1920s Vienna who is frustrated that she feels like life is out of her control: she can't keep her wealthy parents from staying home on Christmas and she can't stop her brother from destroying her toys. When her Uncle Albert (Einstein, weirdly enough) brings her a gift of a nutcracker just before bedtime, she goes into a dream world where she isn't just a little girl, she can be a military leader who saves the world from evil. While critics have said THE NUTCRACKER 3D reminds them of Hitler and World War 2, it actually reminds me more of CHITTY-CHITTY BANG BANG. In both, toys come to life and are killed or oppressed in some way. In both, children have the power to make a difference. THE NUTCRACKER is dark and occasionally scary. In one scene, a toy who has come to life as a boy gets his boy head ripped off (cleanly, though, since he is a toy). Additionally, the rats teeth grow to menacing and scary sizes and these rats DO bite. Eccchhh. THE NUTCRACKER does more than just use the famous music as a backdrop, it's a full on musical, and that can be fun for girls. I will agree with the critics on one thing: THE NUTCRACKER 3D may take place at Christmas but the movie isn't very Christmasy.
