Double Dare You Dead, Guillermo del Toro Lives On

Written by Tara the Mom    Monday, 27 September 2010 11:33

Hellboy/Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro was sitting on top of the world a year ago: planning to direct the sequel to The Hobbit, a slate of films set up at Universal and then Disney announced it was starting a whole new division FOR HIM called Double Dare You which would make scary films for kids. Then, it all disappeared.

Del Toro's first committment was to The Hobbit 2 but MGM's financial problems caused The Hobbit to drag on and on without progress. By the time del Toro stepped away, it was too late to save the Double Dare You opportunity. He told Deadline, "That period came and went, and we were not shooting. That Disney Double Dare You deal is gone."

In the meantime, del Toro spent the summer hanging out at DreamWorks Animation, consulting on Megamind and Kung Fu Panda 2. Now, DWA has hired him as an executive producer-consultant and he's moved former Double Dare You project Trollhunters to DWA from Disney.

While del Toro is mum on what Trollhunters is about (although the title seems to give much away), he tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary...It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid. Normally, kids are idealized in animated films."

Del Toro is still making Haunted Mansion for Disney and At the Mountains of Madness and Midnight Delivery for Universal.
