Haters Gonna Hate: TWILIGHT BREAKING DAWN 2 Leads RAZZIE Noms for Worst in Film

Written by Tara the Mom    Wednesday, 09 January 2013 10:22

2012 Razzie nominations, 33rd annual Razzie nominationsEvery year on the day before the Academy Award nominations announced their nominees for the best in film, the Razzies announce their list of nominees for the worst in film. Increasingly, though, it's become a place for haters to hate. Additionally, the nominations aren't productive, they seem to be out to humiliate actors. For instance, it's incredibly unjust to nominate The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (the best of the series) at all, but certainly not for acting or screenplay. The screenplay, which is adapted from the Stephenie Myer book, actually added in one of the most brilliant twists in modern day moviemaking. As moviegoers, we've all been disappointed from time to time in the acting work by an esteemed actor; for instance, I felt the great Sigourney Weaver phoned in her performance in Avatar which brought the quality of the film down. But to criticize an actor for  performing in their established style of acting seems like a reason to hate. Everyone may not LIKE Kristen Stewart's style of acting which, to be fair, seems realistic to who she is as a person. However, now that we've seen her "act" in the same way throughout all of her movies, is it that she's a bad actress or that the moviegoer just doesn't care for her personality?

Here's the trick to know when it comes to most award shows (Golden Globes are a prime example, the Nick Kids Choice, Teen Choice and MTV Movie Awards are equally guilty): they're looking for celebrity. The bigger the name, the more attention it will bring to their awards. Therefore, the Golden Globes will nominate actors for performance in movies critics and audiences didn't even like, most famously when Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie were nominated for The Tourist.  In the case of the Razzies, they have knowingly created a situation in which the headlines will read "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 leads the Worst in Film nominations!", which guarantees them that people will talk about it and millions of worldwide Twilight fans will angrily click on it, leading them to financial success.

On the other hand, KidsPickFlicks has its own PICK Awards where kids choose the best in film based entirely on the feedback from all kid critics, but we do have one category called the ICK of the Year. We try to stress that this is the film kids found the most disappointing of the year, not just "the worst" The purpose isn't to hate but to let the movie studios know that kids were excited and ready to support a movie that turned out to be tremendously disappointing (and a couple of these Razzie nominated films will likely get an ICK nod for that reason). However, our ICK Award has a point: we want the studios to not take the kid and teen audience for granted and not shrug off making quality filims just because they assume the movie will have a built in audience. For instance, the Twilight movie series has become better with each film [the first Twilight movie, when Summit was a less experienced ministudio, was rushed into production without a small budget]. Since KidsPickFlicks started in 2004, we have seen that shift and we'd like to think we helped encourage the change.
